SkillSlate.com is a website for finding local people to do the services you need, such as handymen, tutors, dog walkers and more. The key distinction is that SkillSlate focuses on individual peoples’ small businesses, as opposed to larger brick-and-mortar companies (which tend to be more expensive). The site consists of service provider profiles, which include pictures, prices, and reviews. SkillSlate was created because despite 15% of US workers being individual service providers, finding ones to hire as consumers is really tough. The two dominant sources that most consumers turn to – Google and Craigslist – don’t provide great results for these individuals.

Why Not Google? The Google algorithm favors websites that have a lot of inbound links. That’s great if you’re looking to hire a big company, but not great if you’re looking to hire a lower cost, independent mover, let’s call him “John.” Why Not Craigslist? Where you will find “John” the mover is on Craigslist, posting and re-posting the same text ad over and over. John’s competitors are doing the exact same thing, and as a consumer, you’re left with results that are based on frequency of post rather than relevancy of the content or the reputation of the poster. To sum up, your options as a consumer right now are to pay a lot for a big company by finding that provider through Google or play “Craigslist Roulette” and hope for the best.
